At Charlotte’s House
As a renter, Charlotte from At Charlotte’s House had to get creative with her One Room Challenge. Because she couldn’t make high-impact updates like adding molding or tile, she chose to transform her shared living room and dining area in other ways. A rental-friendly mural and chandelier complement new furniture and bursts of colorful pattern. Keeping a few of her favorite furniture pieces, she layered in textiles and textures to give the room a fresh look.
Design Addict Mom
Stacey-Ann of Design Addict Mom gutted her primary bathroom to make the previously dim space feel brighter and more expansive. Keeping the layout the same, she repainted the walls and ceiling with a warm white color, replaced the floor tiles with white Carrara marble, and swapped dark shower tiles for more modern subway tiles with a touch of pink. New vanities, countertops, sinks, and lighting rounded out this remodel. Stacey-Ann also overhauled her closet—installing new wood floors, lighting, and an improved closet system—and refreshed the bedroom by adding light fixtures, drapes, and bedding.
Erika Ward Interiors
Atlanta-based interior designer Erika Ward elevated a builder-basic kitchen for her One Room Challenge. As illustrated in this rendering, a custom hood over the range and contemporary wall sconces lend new personality to this previously uninspired space. Wavy glass mosaic tiles cover the walls from counter to ceiling for a stunning effect.
Erin Kestenbaum
Erin Kestenbaum transformed the dark, all-brown kitchen in her 1940s Colonial home into an airy, inviting space that marries classic and modern styles. Tackling the entire remodel DIY-style, she updated the cabinetry with a warm blue hue, installed tile and trim, and added a window to boost natural light, while carefully selecting materials that would show patina over time to fit in with the home’s age. As a bonus, she repurposed a former pantry into a functional mudroom to ease daily routines.
Girl & Grey
One of two participants chosen by our editors, Courtney of Girl & Grey started her One Room Challenge in the kitchen, but the project grew to include the connected living and dining areas. She and her husband embarked on a remodel to spruce up their fixer-upper home to better fit their family. Rich green kitchen cabinets, a suite of modern light fixtures, and a new contemporary fireplace completely transformed the look of this mountain home.
Gray Malin
Photographer Gray Malin reworked his team’s shared office space with collaboration in mind. A communal table, two multi-purpose meeting areas, and a separate conference room now facilitate teamwork while allowing for privacy when needed. The bright, colorful aesthetic brings playful energy to the workspace, and Gray’s own framed photographs dot the walls with stylish images of global travel.
Homme Boys
Alex and Austin of Homme Boys transformed their former office space into a dreamy primary bedroom suite. The construction and design duo did all the work themselves, including gutting the interior, rebuilding walls, and constructing custom cabinetry, doors, and furniture. An arched door, wallpapered ceiling, and textured, earthy elements bring bold style to this new bedroom.
I Spy DIY
Jenni from I Spy DIY reworked the small upstairs bathroom in the 1890 Milwaukee home that she and her husband are renovating into an Airbnb. A large window, freestanding tub, stunning chandelier, and marble floors lend classic style to the formerly neglected space. Above the wainscoting hangs custom wallpaper Jenni had made from prints found in vintage botany books.
Jewel Marlowe
Jewel Marlowe of Jeweled Interiors, a guest participant chosen by our editors, transformed not one but three spaces in her home. She injected major personality into her living room—as well as the attached kitchen and eat-in areas—with bold colors, framed murals, and large-scale patterns. The result is polished and glamorous with a touch of funky style.
The Learner Observer
Thalita of The Learner Observer reworked two bedrooms into one primary suite in a project she’s been waiting three years to complete. She added drama by combining timeless touches like panel molding and marble-look tile with trendy dark-blue hues and mixed patterns. Polished nickel and gold accents add sophisticated shine.
Making it Lovely
Nicole Balch from Making it Lovely worked with her 10-year-old daughter to transform her bedroom. A new color scheme, a bigger bed, and a bold patterned rug will work for her daughter’s tween years and beyond. The mix of existing furniture and secondhand finds make the room makeover truly one of a kind.
Nicole White Designs
Nicole of Nicole White Designs converted her combined living and dining area into a multi-functional room that now serves as an office, dining room, and wine or coffee lounge. The upscale space features mid-century modern furnishings, clever built-ins, and a custom wood treatment that runs across the walls and ceiling. The room now elegantly toggles between client meetings during the day and casual entertaining at night.
Old Brand New
Dabito of Old Brand New transformed a bedroom into a multifunctional space that works as an office, library, and lounge. After removing wall-to-wall closets, he installed a custom desk with built-in shelving and kept the sleeper sofa to accommodate guests. Inspired by a vintage print by a Vietnamese French painter, Mai Trung Thứ, he layered in textured wallpaper, velvet curtains, and an oriental rug for a richly colorful look.
Oscar Bravo
Oscar from Oscar Bravo Home had his work cut out for him with an outdated guest bedroom furnished with a broken bed and nightstands. He made over the space to create a calm, traditional bedroom where out-of-town guests can relax in style. Soothing tones of gray and green are highlighted with gold accessories to create an inviting, modern-meets-traditional space.
Place of My Taste
Aniko of Place of My Taste began updating her primary bathroom and ended up completely reconfiguring the space. With a goal of enlarging the room without actually adding square footage, she swapped out the bathtub and showerheads and turned the vanity wall into a focal point. A combination of vintage and modern elements, along with richly textured materials, creates a luxurious retreat.
The Rath Project
Diane from The Rath Project redesigned her dining room and sunroom to infuse the spaces with personality—and bring them up to par with the rest of the home. A glossy blue ceiling and splashy orange wallpaper up the energy, while thrift store finds and quirky wall art layer in character. The raucous mix of pattern and color remains cohesive with touches of black and wood tones throughout.
Room for Tuesday
Sarah, the creator of Room for Tuesday, wanted to give her formal living room a timeless quality, while incorporating more contemporary elements. Built-in shelving and an efficient gas fireplace update the space with modern convenience, while new furnishings, herringbone hardwood flooring, and luxurious textiles create an elegant entertaining spot. The room’s new look now echoes the grand architecture of the home.
SG Style + Carmeon Hamilton
Shavonda from SG Style and Carmeon Hamilton teamed up to remodel a previously dark, dated bedroom and bathroom. The rooms received a total overhaul with new French doors, marble floors, light fixtures, gorgeous fabrics, and sun tunnels to bring in additional natural light. The final product is a tranquil primary bedroom suite outfitted in organic textures and a nature-inspired color palette.
Undecorated Home
Megan from Undecorated Home stripped her daughter’s bathroom down to the studs to completely remake the space, which is also shared by guests when the family entertains. Closing off an awkward walk-through to the primary suite created space for a double vanity, while a new transom window welcomes natural light. Organic materials, including a raw wood vanity, marble countertop, concrete floors, and terra-cotta glazed shower tiles, borrow texture from nature to create an inviting space that’s suitable for guests.
Veronica Solomon
Interior designer Veronica Solomon transformed a 9-by-6-foot utilitarian laundry room into a luxurious space that makes chores more appealing. Removing hanging bars made way for custom-built cabinetry with caned door fronts. Marble countertops and flooring add visual impact and an opulent feel. Japanese-inspired wallpaper featuring a crane pattern and an ornate gold mirror deliver an unexpected dose of elegance. Want to see more of these room transformations?
