At Home With Ashley
Ashley of At Home with Ashley worked with her husband to renovate their laundry room from the ground up. This included replacing the exterior wall, window, and an outdated water heater. Determined to create a beautiful space while adding efficiency, they used the latest products to add modern function without losing the home’s vintage charm. Custom artwork, subway tile with a gold Schluter trim, and colorful Milton & King wallpaper are just a few of the details completing this happy space.
Casey Keasler
Casey Keasler of Casework transformed a dark and dated bathroom in her Ranchalow with a mix of modern elements and a ’60s Craftsman palette. The floor tile is a custom-blended random pattern of three colors from Portland-based Pratt and Larson. Casey designed the open vanity, which gives the illusion of more space while providing additional storage, and had it manufactured locally.
Dorsey Designs
Sarah and David of Dorsey Designs put their DIY skills to work to transform their main living space into a functional family-friendly hub. The renovation included adding windows, replacing the front door, adding custom built-ins, replacing stair treads, and adding a slat railing to the stairs—all keeping with their love of mid-century modern design. The Farmhouse Project
Shawn and Kris of The Farmhouse Project based their One Room Challenge bedroom makeover around chinoiserie wallpaper from Graham & Brown. “We knew we wanted to incorporate this 18th-century Chinese motif into our bedroom and fell in love with their Tori Teal pattern,” says the duo. “The design was traditional with an updated moody color palette that worked seamlessly with our historic farmhouse and overall style aesthetic.” Their room makeover incorporates a versatile mix of new and antique furnishings with a minimal design approach.
Home Made by Carmona
Ursula of Home Made by Carmona was one of two participants chosen by Better Homes & Gardens editors for this spring’s One Room Challenge. Her family room transformation is a perfect example of what a fresh coat of paint and the right furniture pieces can do for a room. When plans went awry and renovation wasn’t in the budget, some well-chosen pieces were all it took to transform the space. “I decided to embrace the things I didn’t love about the room, and turn negatives into positives with a little creative reimagining,” she says.
House of Funk
Sandra Funk of House of Funk designed a hygge hideaway for her 9-year-old daughter. “My daughter was integral to selecting art that spoke to her: a mix of landscape and animal prints that bring the outdoors in, and of course, a clear call for adventure,” she says. “Her gallery wall features incredible artwork by artists on Minted.”
House of Jade Interiors
Kirsten and Erin of House of Jade dreamed up a modern country kitchen complete with custom appliances by Big Chill. They added touches of natural wood, blue, brass, and black to a builder-grade kitchen to bring warmth and interest back into the space.
House Seven Design
Anissa of House Seven Design enlisted her entire family to transform her teenage daughter’s bedroom with furnishings that will grow with her. Starting from scratch, they removed the painted floors before layering the teen retreat with warm wood tones, lots of texture, and the perfect amount of color to satisfy both child and parent.
The House That Lars Built
Brittany of The House That Lars Built transformed this kitchen and dining area from a small, dark space to an airy hub at the heart of the home. By knocking out a wall, replacing the windows with beautiful black casements, and anchoring the cabinetry, counters, and trim in white, the space is now sophisticated and sleek.
Inspired By Charm
Michael of Inspired By Charm says his primary bedroom makeover was inspired by a vintage paint-by-number, which now hangs prominently in the space. “The goal was to combine coziness, personality, and modern country colonial style,” he says. “I added the coziness by wrapping the room in a board-and-batten treatment painted the walls a putty gray.” New bedding adds a touch of modern style, while vintage finds bring in a sense of thoughtful collection and personality. “What was once builder beige and uninspired is now a retreat that’s comforting, stylish, and uniquely me,” says Michael.
Jana Bek
Jana Bek transformed her rental apartment in Brooklyn into a colorful home with clever temporary finishes. Smart furnishings hide awkward structural elements while the addition of plum grasscloth in her bedroom turned a white box into a rich, inviting oasis.
Jessica Brigham
Jessica Brigham revamped her outdated 1934 Craftsman bungalow kitchen into a green statement space. The transformation included restoring original red-oak hardwood floors (buried underneath layers of tile) and repairing an original plaster ceiling detail where a former partition existed. The kitchen features the hottest kitchen cabinet color trend and mixes metals and finishes while keeping with the home’s historical charm.
Kelly Golightly
Kelly of Kelly Golightly used a mix of aspirational and accessible brands, as well as vintage and modern finds, to transform an industrial loft space in downtown LA into a luxurious office space. The room belongs to Kristen Turner, a friend and founder of CarpeCreative Studios, and was designed with feminine pops of pink and blue.
Murphy Deesign
Inspired by European design and a recent trip to Cartagena, Colombia, Dee of Murphy Deesign updated her small-space kitchen and mudroom into the warm, family-friendly kitchen of her dreams. A mix of warm wood textures appears on a custom ceiling treatment for an unexpected twist, while modern appliances and timeless classic finishes round out her design.
The Pink Pagoda
Jennifer of The Pink Pagoda renovated a Jack-and-Jill bathroom in a ranch house that hadn’t seen much love since the early ’80s. It even had the rust-colored wallpaper to prove it! The bathroom needed to function both as her daughter’s when home from college and as a guest bath, so Jennifer set out to create a design that would appeal to visitors of all ages. By mixing classic and modern, and adding a generous dose of pink, she did just this. Head to The Pink Pagoda later this week for the full reveal.
Sarah Gunn
The open-plan kitchen, living room, and dining room is the most-used space in the home of Sarah Gunn, but it wasn’t functional or beautiful. To remodel the open floor plan, she painted the cabinets, swapped the countertop, and wrapped the walls in custom striped wallpaper. Six weeks later, her family has the bright, coastal-inspired space she has always wanted.
Sherry Hart
Sherry Hart of Design Indulgence transformed the combined living room and dining room in her sister’s charming 1946 cottage in Atlanta. The look was inspired by classic design and the adage that you don’t have to redecorate every time a new trend comes around. A blue porcelain collection complements the warm cream tones of Fabricut curtains and Pacific Designs wallcovering. Vintage rattan, a Mark Sikes chandelier, and striped fabrics strike the perfect balance for this cozy cottage.
Sugar & Cloth
Ashley and Jared of Sugar & Cloth redesigned their open concept living and dining room, which takes center stage in their home inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. Keeping with the midcentury look of the architecture, this transformation features large statement art, vintage-inspired leather chairs, and brass lighting fixtures.
Veronica Solomon
Veronica Solomon—another participant chosen by Better Homes & Gardens editors for this spring’s challenge—created a moody primary bedroom featuring a small bedside desk area. The goal was to surround herself with the things she loves while having the ability to get work done on the fly. Layers of black textures accentuate a hair-on hide desk from her soon-to-launch furniture collection in collaboration with Creative Style Furniture. Select pops of color, a custom ceiling treatment, and treasured items make her space even more special.
Vintage Revivals
Mandi of Vintage Revivals worked her DIY magic in this sweet nursery full of easy projects. She and her sister painted the adorable wall pattern, which has an easy tutorial on her site. Loving touches of handcrafted decor and family memorabilia are featured throughout the makeover.
